“It’s just to bake a cake, Cara — please?”

she just wants to say thank you — for being kind and taking her in, for being patient with her and her fits and her panic and the pain she put them through without wanting to —- it’s important. ]

( ask John rests on the tip of her tongue, unspoken —–
he, who would naturally bet the best bet to cater to the
small girl’s needs, was hindered by his loss of powers.
hard to trust him with Charlotte’s care when his defenses
were drastically impaired. it was Cara herself, or nothing. )

          “ —– Fine.”

( her resolve had fallen. )

Ok you guys, we all know that Tumblr runs primarily in English

seagreeneyes:

BUT WE ALSO KNOW THAT A SIGNIFICANT PART OF TUMBLR USERS ARE NOT NATIVE SPEAKERS

Here’s the deal: my first language is Italian. I know plenty of people on this website whose first language is Italian. Nevertheless, when we’re interacting with each other on Tumblr, we speak English.

I am not objecting to this system, it’s actually good practice for some people, to be able to speak a second language extensively.

BUT I HAVE A PROPOSITION FOR YOU.

Why not have a “Speak Your Own Language Day” where all of us exclusively speak in our native language?

(No but apart from the small rebellion from the US-centric and generally Anglophone-centric environment we got here, think about trying to speak to people from other countries via excessive use of Google Translate it’ll be a blast)

Ok, since this post has finally reached 100 notes I think it’s a good time to give a date, and since no one else has advanced suggestions I’m gonna do it

I’m proposing Wednesday 7th May, so the post has a chance to do a couple more laps and more people get a chance to participate (French Friday sounded hilarious, but I don’t wanna wait until next friday and this friday seems a bit too soon).

How it’ll work:

  • If you’re native language is something other than English, speak that!
  • If you have multiple languages you can pick from the choice is yours friend, speak all, speak one, whatever’s best for you
  • You’ll blog in your language all day: text posts, replies, tags (except triggers and organizational tags), the whole nine yards. Regardless of what language people choose to speak to you, you answer in your own.
  • Midnight to midnight according to your own time zone
  • English native speakers, if you wanna participate maybe you could practice a second language you’re learning
  • If anyone makes fun of anyone else for their language (and I’m including English native speakers that might choose to speak a second language on the day) I’m gonna come for you (◕‿◕✿)
  • The tag is gonna be #Speak Your Language Day if you wanna tag your posts with that!

cxburn:

Cara is more valued by Stephen and John than herself. Because her own past marked her in that way.

Oh my god, don’t even get me started on this.

Cara literally functions off of peoples’ perception of her. She’s so unwittingly desperate for the approval of those who surround her, that when she lacks it, she just sort of … crumbles.

It isn’t so much that she’s weak. But, track-record-wise, she isn’t exactly notorious for having exceptional judgement. She left a dance with strange boy who told her she was pretty, and narrowly escaped when he began to sexually harass her. She teamed up with Julian and Nelly, and Julian turned out to be a total psychopath. Betrayal is a common element in her life —— it’s no wonder she struggles with the perception she holds of herself, when her judgement is clearly so damn poor.

And then there’s John —— he earned her trust, slowly and carefully and surely, and as a result, she puts full confidence in him. It’s subsequently natural to her to operate parallel his opinions, a possibly subconscious method of maintaining his full regard, as well as his interest and affections. She’s a copy-cat, more or less, a reflection of those she respects, pointed out by Julian in episode eleven when he remarks how she’s taken on Nelly’s sense of style, or even later in episode fifteen, when he points out she’s still working by his old tricks.

Besides, John mentions in episode five (I think?) that Cara never questioned his authority or decisions until Stephen came along. Because here’s another individual she can trust with absolute certainty and easy, thanks to psychic bonding, who values her, maybe even just as much as John does. So, naturally, she begins to parallel him, as well, her carefully-built guard cracking slightly to allow for her impulse to take over, less careful and more unruly, turning against authority (John) when she deems fit, despite the lack of prior rational thinking.

And this change is what thrusts her into the position of leader, subsequently causing John’s respect to fade as he begins to question her authority. Considering John is, really, what structured her to begin with, this loss of confidence causes her to turn to self-doubt. Then, when mistake after mistake begins to creep up on her, her decisions always taking a turn for the worse, she loses the trust  of the People, which causes her performance and uncertainty to spiral even further downwards.

tl;dr Since Cara is incapable of trusting herself, she relies on the trust of those she trusts to function. The very essence of who she is has been pieced together by those who surround her. When both these element are taken away from her, she crumbles.
